Quercus alba
White oak (Quercus alba) is a large deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is renowned for its exceptional longevity, being able to live for several centuries. Its form is broad and majestic, with a rounded crown and wide-spreading branches. The bark is pale gray, often scaly, developing deep ridges with age. Its lobed leaves turn from bluish-green in summer to shades of wine-red and deep purple in autumn, before browning and sometimes persisting on the tree through part of the winter, especially on young specimens. The acorns, characteristic of oaks, are sweet and edible, and serve as food for wildlife. This tree is highly prized for its high-quality wood.
Soil type: White oak prefers well-drained, deep, fertile soils that are slightly acidic to neutral. It tolerates a variety of soils, including clay and sandy soils.
