Phellodendron amurense
Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense), also called cork tree, is a medium-sized ornamental tree known for its thick, deeply furrowed, corky bark that becomes more pronounced with age. Its deciduous foliage consists of large, dark green compound leaves that turn a brilliant golden yellow in autumn, creating a striking display. In spring, it produces clusters of small, inconspicuous greenish flowers, followed in autumn by clusters of round, shiny black fruits that often persist on the tree through winter and serve as a food source for birds. This tree develops a broad, rounded crown, making it an excellent shade tree. It is also valued for its hardiness and tolerance of diverse urban conditions.
Soil type: Phellodendron amurense is highly adaptable and tolerates a wide range of soil types, including poor, clay, sandy, or loamy soils. However, it prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
